For the footballer of the same name, see Steven Campbell (footballer).
Steven Campbell (1953 - August 15, 2007) was a Scottish artist mainly concerned with pictorial representation. He was labelled as one of the New Glasgow Boys or "Glasgow Pups" along with Peter Howson, Ken Currie and Adrian Wisniewski who studied together at the Glasgow School of Art.
His work is exhibited in Glasgow Museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, the British Council, Tate Britain in London and the Tate in Liverpool.
He was born in Glasgow and attended Rutherglen Academy, leaving at age sixteen. He started out in his working life as a steelworker, then worked as a fitter and engineer for seven years. At the steelworks he read existential literature in the crane cabin. He then tried his hand as an artist, attending Glasgow School of Art from 1978-82. After graduating, he was a scholar on the Fulbright program in New York. His first one-man show in 1983 in New York attracted considerable attention. He had considerable success at the Barbara Toll gallery in the city.
He became critically and commercial successful, particularly at his exhibition at the Third Eye Centre in Glasgow in 1985.
His work featured in the "New Image Glasgow" exhibition (1985) and in the Edinburgh Festival exhibition "The Vigorous Imagination" (1987).
Later on he nearly gave up painting, going into a self-imposed exile, only to return after almost ten years in 2002 with a lauded show The Caravan Club at Edinburgh's Talbot Rice Gallery.
He died of a ruptured appendix

"Walking by the stock exchange"
From the page:
I wrote this poem about walking by the stock exchange on Wallstreet and Broad St. every day. I wrote it in my head. Lindsey Jones
I walk by America every day
She is picket fenced and flagged
with men and machines guarding her facade
cold, iron, and steel pressed to their chests.
they aren't allowed to pose for photographs,
but if you lean real close they will let you know
"I'll just hover in the distance, by accident in the frame"
Sometimes they wink while practicing this art of chance
at Russian and Japanese girls who
stare straight up at America while she is barricaded
and the whole time the sewer spills gaseous material
from steam holes and
these unknown pressure points
like some post-apocalyptic scene
where a soon to be Harrison Ford is a parked car somewhere off wall street.

Funny People

From the page:
There is an article in the New York Times about the McKibben Lofts in Bushwick or "East Williamsburg" that is pretty funny. This is an area of New York City that is getting more condensed poverty because of the neo-liberal reforms. To add to this situation, these wide eyed "artists" think they are "helping" the community by talking about starting art programs. You know what? Poor people living in projects not want your art. You know what they want? Food, security, some money and for your stupid band to stop playing. And for the record, patronizing local businesses DOES NOT somehow counteract gentrification. ....

The Atlantic Yards

From the page :
The new Frank Gehry design for his Miss Brooklyn building is ugly. I have a feeling the Atlantic Yards project, a massive arena-office tower plan for downtown Brooklyn, will not come to fruition. At least not with a recession looming on the horizon.
It is also a very interesting design because this Miss Brooklyn building is a perfect example of gendered architecture.
